The Landmarks of New York

「紐約經典地標建築攝影展」2006年7月27日至9月11日將在國立台灣博物館展出。這項展覽共計展出81件紐約地標的攝影作品,是為了慶祝《紐約地標保存法》立法40週年紀念而舉辦的。

這81張黑白照片,加上對每個地標的說明文字,陳述出紐約各個地標的文化、歷史和建築的重要性。這些影像呈現出各色各樣的建築風格和類型,有宗教、商業和住宅類,包括殖民時代的小農舍,到奢華時代的豪宅,都看得到。這項展覽用地標與歷史區,來說明紐約市五個行政區與眾不同的特徵及歷史。例如,中央公園、聖派崔克大教堂、布魯克林大橋、自由女神像、卡內基廳、哥倫比亞大學、紐約公共圖書館、扁鐵大樓、大中央車站、大都會美術館、史坦威廳、克萊斯勒大廈、帝國大廈、洛克菲勒中心、古根漢博物館。參觀者透過這些照片,可以看到紐約市從1640年代至今的歷史與轉變風貌。

《紐約地標保存法》保護具有特色或特殊歷史或美學價值的建築、地產和物件,促進紐約社會文化的發展。紐約市共有1118處地標、104處室內地標、9處風景地標和84個歷史區。這項由紐約歷史地標保存中心籌辦的展覽,囊括了其中一些最重要、最不同凡響的建築。策展人是著名文物保存運動人士Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel,同時也是展覽特刊《紐約經典地標﹕紐約市歷史建築圖鑑》(The Landmarks of New York: An Illustrated Record of the City’s Historic Buildings)的作者。

在台北的展出是這項攝影展巡迴亞洲的第二站(亞洲展出地點﹕東京、台北、香港、曼谷與吉隆坡),安排巡迴展出的是美國國務院教育文化事務局。 國立台灣博物館開放時間是每天上午10點至下午5點,星期一休館。

The “Landmarks of New York” photo exhibit will be displayed at the National Taiwan Museum July 27 through September 11, 2006. This exhibit consists of 81 photographs of New York City landmarks commissioned to mark the 40th anniversary of the enactment of the New York Landmark Preservation Act.

The black and white photographs with explanatory text about each landmark, address the cultural, historical, and architectural significance of each site. Images in the exhibition represent a panorama of styles and building types including religious, commercial, and residential and range from small colonial farmhouses to the mansions of the Gilded Age. Landmarks and Historic Districts representing the distinctive character and history of each of the five boroughs are depicted in the presentation. Examples include: Central Park, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty, Carnegie Hall, Columbia University, New York Public Library, The Flatiron Building, Grand Central Terminal, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Steinway Hall, Chrysler Building, Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, Guggenheim Museum. Through these photographs, the viewer is able to see a snapshot of the transition and history of New York from the 1640s up to the present day.

This New York City Landmarks Law preserves buildings, properties and objects with unique character or special historical or aesthetic value as part of the development of the cultural fabric of the community. New York boasts 1,118 landmarks, 104 interior landmarks, 9 scenic landmarks and 84 historic districts. Organized by New York’s Historic Landmarks Preservation Center, this exhibition documents some of the most significant and unusual of these properties. Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel, a well-known preservation activist, serves as the curator of the exhibition and author of the accompanying publication The Landmarks of New York: An Illustrated Record of the City’s Historic Buildings.

This exhibit is the second stop on its Asian regional tour (Tokyo, Taipei, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur) arranged by the Department of State Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs.

The National Taiwan Museum is open daily (except Mondays) from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
